Storyteller - Mike Lockett

Stories Galore is back! This  conference strand is created with story listeners in mind.  You can choose from any performance in the "Stories Galore" or "Fringes All the Way."  What is a fringe?  A fringe is a longer storytelling piece that is sometimes experimental or edgy in nature.

Included in the $150 ticket for the full weekend is admission to all of the Stories Galore or Fringe performances (workshops not included), Friday night concert, Saturday breakfast, Saturday keynote address, Saturday banquet, Saturday evening olio and swaps, Sunday breakfast, Sunday morning performance.

Dangerous When Wet: Booze, Sex, and My Mother

Performed by Jamie Brickhouse

Four-time Moth champ, Jamie Brickhouse, battles the bottle and his Texas tornado of a mother Mama Jean in his wickedly intoxicating alcoholic odyssey from small-town sissy to louche Manhattanite. Darkly comic, the Washington Post called this five-time award-winning show “stylish,” “polished” and dubbed Jamie “a natural raconteur.”

Mohawk Storytelling Traditions
Presented by Kay Olan

Kay will be sharing her story about how she, a Mohawk woman, became a Native American storyteller, why she tells the stories that come from her culture and what she has learned about sharing Native stories in a respectful way.  She will tell stories that come from the oral tradition of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois).   Kay's presentation will be followed by a brief Q & A.

About Kay:

Kay Olan (Ionataie:was) (Mohawk Nation, Wolf Clan) is a Mohawk educator and storyteller.  She taught elementary school in New York State for over thirty-three years.  During that time, she was often asked to tell the stories that were passed down through the oral tradition of her people and to give cultural presentations about the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) to various community, school and college groups.  Upon retiring from teaching, she moved to Kanatsiohareke, a traditional Mohawk Community located in central New York State.  She lived and worked there for almost three years coordinating and promoting culturally related conferences, lectures, workshops and programs including the Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Language Immersion Program.   READ MORE

Mother Jones - Her Life and Times

Performed by Claire Nolan

From Irish Immigrant to the Most Dangerous Woman in America - Mary Harris "Mother" Jones, labor organizer of the late 19 and early 20th century, was more than a magazine!  She was the "Most Dangerous Woman in America". Claire Nolan will tell her story in a first person re-enactment.

About Claire: Claire Nolan is an accomplished Storyteller who has performed throughout the Northeast.   Through the Great Minds Series of the Schenectady Theater for Children, Claire also tells the stories of women whose lives have made an impact on the way we live today. She is a member of the Story Circle of the Capital District.

Session B - 1:30-3:00 PM - Stories Galore

And Then The Volcano Erupted: a Love Story

Performed by Regina Ress

The true and truly imagined tale of a pair of over-many-life-times lovers who find each other again in a magical Andean town which boasts sensuous hot springs, the Virgin's Waterfall voluptuously erupting volcano. This kind of conjunction excites the senses and ignites desire.

American Heroes through the Ages

Performed by Mike Lockett

This performance is a colorful look at American history through stories and song. Done in costume, Mike will share many stories, including: Birth of America, War with the Pirates of Tripoli, The War Against Mexico, A Civil-War General who Hated Bloodshed, The First Female Confederate Officer, and The Candy Bomber.

About Mike: Mike Lockett is a teller of traditional tales.  He has given over 4000 programs across 31 states and 17 countries in his roles as an educator, author and storyteller.  He has published 24 books, 100+ articles and 6 CDs/DVDs.  In his role as a historian he brings “American Heroes through the Ages” as a fringe at STF.

New York Teller Showcase

Performed by Local Tellers

This event will showcase some of the finest tellers in the Saratoga Springs area and throughout New York.  Tellers share eight fascinating and unexpected historical stories about people and places in New York State, from the 1700s through this century. Learn More Here

Katie Green - STF 2019 Fringe

Sweetful and the Magic Circus: Cleveland 1963-1973
Performed by Katie Green

What does it take to convert a conforming middle-class white girl to a fearless political activist? How does experience transform our values and put them in motion? This story brings to life the tumultuous 1960's and Katie's personal revolution that followed the compelling lessons that went
along with it.

About Katie:  Katie Green returns to StF from the Gulf Coast of Florida.  She tells stories of Truth, Folk, and Faerie to bring people closer to each other and the environment.

Saturday Evening Performances  

7:15 - 9 pm  OLIO

What is the Olio?  It's a fabulous night of storytelling performances for adults.  This year's stories will make you laugh out loud, tear up a bit, and maybe even spark an interest in giving storytelling a try ... if you haven't already caught the storytelling bug.  Judith Heineman and Michele Carlo will co-host this year's Olio.  Learn More Here

To Speak

Performed by Rachael Harrington

There is a systematic way in which women’s stories are buried, made to wither for lack of sunlight. Does folklore say anything about this, and can old tales help women reframe their stories? To Speak uncovers traditional stories that speak into the #metoo movement, exploring the power of telling your story and being truly heard.

Adult audiences: Explores issues of sexual harassment

About Rachael: Rachael Harrington performs traditional and personal stories in schools, festivals, and as a guest lecturer at Rutgers University. She has presented workshops at American Library Association, NJ Association of School Libraries, NJ Education Association, and the National Storytelling Network Summit.

Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton-Albany Girl. American Woman
Performed by Eileen Egan Mack

The Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton program affords the opportunity to celebrate another strong, but unsung heroine. Like so many of the nation’s founding mothers, Eliza’s role in helping birth a nation deserves light. In this program, the audience has a chance to meet the girl who grew up in Albany and found herself at the pivotal center of political and social
movements which helped shape a young republic and society. Elizabeth is portrayed from the perspective of an older Eliza who is by now a widow after her husband's murder in 1804.

About Eileen:  Eileen has been bringing her singing, acting, storytelling, and writing to audiences since the 20th century! Her portrayal of Adirondack born writer Jeanne Robert Foster has mesmerized audiences throughout New York State and all the way to Dublin’s Trinity College for the John Butler Yeats Society.  Eileen has performed her Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton program with the Capital Region’s premier chamber ensemble, the Musicians of Ma’alwcyk.

Poking at the Rabbi: Traditional and Personal Jewish Stories
Performed by Beth Novik

Wonderful interwoven tales between Beth Novik's personal narrative and the Jewish folk tales that both delight and teach.  This is the kind of Sunday School experience you wish you had!

About Beth:  Beth is the co-founder of the Jewish Storytelling Festival in Saratoga Springs and has been telling both personal Jewish stories and Jewish folk tales for long enough that she can’t remember when she started.  Beth has a special ability to connect with her audience creating an event filled with both humor and learning. When she’s not telling stories she teaches workshops on stress and joy, is a massage therapist and coaches people to let go of anxiety and fear.
