Call for Fringe Submissions
CALL FOR FRINGE SUBMISSIONS!!
DUE BY JANUARY 10, 2022
What is a Fringe, anyway??
A Fringe is an opportunity to showcase performances that are one or more of the following:
- New works
- Experimental works
- Unconventional pieces in topic or presentation
To get your imagination sparked, here are some examples one might consider:
- A string of stories on a theme that ties the show together
- A long form fictional, personal or historical story/program
- A story told in mime
- A story that includes a multi-media aspect or incorporates other modalities aside from spoken word (music, movement, etc)
All Fringe performances at Sharing The Fire should be related to storytelling in some fashion.
All Fringe performances should be performance ready. While the show can be a works-in-progress, it should be in a presentable stage. Simply talking about your project is not acceptable.
How are Fringe shows for Sharing The Fire selected? Glad you asked!
Fringe submissions are randomly chosen by lottery. They’re not vetted. Everyone has an equal chance to be selected!
However, if you are selected for the Olio performance you are not eligible for a Fringe in order to allow as many people as possible to have an opportunity to perform and strut their stuff!
There will be 8-9 Fringe slots, depending upon the schedule. They will be held concurrently with the workshops or swaps.
The Fringe performances can be between 45 minutes to 90 minutes in length. This can include a Q & A, a participatory component, etc. The performance does not need to fill the whole 90 minutes.
TO SUBMIT, PLEASE SEND:
- The title of the Fringe performance (or working title). Make it tantalizing!
- Name(s) of performer(s)
- A short description of the piece (this will appear in the program, if selected)
Send the above information to Steph Tassinari: nestorytelling.org
GOOD LUCK!

ABOUT OUR THEME, “IMAGINING OUR POWER”
Here are just some thoughts and ideas. This is not an exhaustive list! Use your imagination!!
- What’s the power of storytelling? How can storytelling access power?
- In what aspects of life can this power be used (ie political, social justice, education, etc)
- How do you see power in your role as a Storyteller? As a storytelling community?
- How does the role of imagination get integrated in our work as storytellers? As story listeners?
- How has our power as storytellers been expanded due to the pandemic? How has imagination played a role?
CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS (90 minutes) – Saturday & Sunday, March 25 and 27
We are open to all kinds of workshops that would benefit storytellers from beginning through advanced levels. The possibilities are as broad as your imagination! Areas for consideration may include, but are not limited to; Storytelling Applications, Storytelling Skills, Innovation, Play & Humor, Healing & Spirituality, Technology, Culture & Traditions, and Communication & Engagement in the World. While not all workshops will connect to the theme, we hope that you will consider how your workshop might connect to “Imagining Our Power” in the broadest sense.
The per session honorarium for a workshop is $175.
Note: Compensation is limited to this amount regardless of the number of presenters of the session. Presenter(s) must register for the entire conference at the regular rate. Scholarship assistance may be available for those who need it.
CONFERENCE INTENSIVES (3-4 hours) - Friday afternoon, March 25, 2022
Intensives are deeper dives into one area of interest. If you are interested in presenting an intensive, you will need to indicate this on the application and supply some additional information as stated in the proposal form.
The honorarium for presenting an intensive is $400.
Note: Compensation is limited to this amount regardless of the number of presenters OR the number of participants in the intensive. Intensive presenters do not need to register for the conference, but we hope that you do!
