Meghna Bhat
I am a proud first-generation immigrant woman born and raised in India and have lived in the US for 20 years. I belong to the generation of awkward yet fierce and sensitive women who feel they are "not Indian enough" or "not American enough". I found my recent calling in storytelling when I could not work full time due to a visa hiccup and took my 1st oral storytelling class at Capital Storytelling (Sacramento) in 2018. There was no looking back, and with the power of sharing and listening to true and personal stories, I witnessed and learned community building, healing, and solidarity in a very polarized world. I have shared my stories on stage for Capital Storytelling events ("Mothers and Fathers", 2019 and "Immigrant Stories", 2022) and at the 2024 MN StoryFest. In addition, I have shared my stories at virtual open mics and community story labs in the past 5 years.
When I am not doing storytelling, I am an independent gender and social justice consultant, multidisciplinary educator/ artist, and feminist scholar. As a recipient of the 2022 Seeding Creativity Artist Grant, I created Gulabi Stories: A South Asian Healing Initiative, a multidisciplinary storytelling platform where true beautiful stories around healing within the larger South Asian diaspora are highlighted and amplified. Ideally, I would love to spend the majority of my time sharing stories on stage and connecting with different storytelling communities.
