Executive Director, Northeast Storytelling (NEST)

Job Description:
Northeast Storytelling (NEST) seeks to contract with a part-time Executive Director. We are a membership-based nonprofit organization that provides education, advocacy, opportunities, and support to storytellers, story listeners, and story lovers, primarily in New England and New York state.
NESTs Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, community outreach, and coordinating our annual conference, Sharing the Fire. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors. While storytelling expertise is not a requirement, we are looking for someone with initiative and an enthusiasm and passion for stories and the arts!
Job Responsibilities
- Work in coordination with the Conference Co-Chairs for NEST’s annual “Sharing the Fire” conference. This includes marketing, planning, and other tasks to ensure a successful event.
- Attend the conference in your role as ED including organizing the registration table, being point person for questions and other tasks, as needed.
- Work with the Board to develop and implement strategic planning and increase the overall visibility of the organization.
- Act as the liaison and official representative of NEST with members, other storytelling organizations, and the public.
- Maintain membership database and the general accounts: monitor membership renewals. (NEST currently uses Neon CRM).
- Prepare and implement the annual budget and financial plan with the assistance of the BOD treasurer.
- Develop and implement effective marketing outreach, communications, promotional materials, and social media campaigns.
- Work with NEST’s bookkeeper to maintain accounts payable and receivable and create monthly and annual reports for the Board. (We use QuickBooks).
- Maintain on-going communication with the BOD treasurer.
- Schedule and attend all board meetings. Serve as ex officio member of all standing committees of the Board.
- Work with NEST’s technology specialist to keep website and Neon CRM system files and emails up to date.
- Ensure that digital files are backed up on a regular basis and that all Federal and state paperwork is filed in a timely manner.
- Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
Demonstrated Professional Qualifications in the following areas:
- Nonprofit management experience
- Solid organization abilities and planning skills
- High level strategic thinking and planning
- Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors
- Strong marketing, social media, and public relations skills; fundraising and grant writing experience a plus
- Solid financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making, and reporting
- Experience with a CRM system (We use NEON)
- Solid computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office software and QuickBooks
- Comfortable working via Zoom
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Excellent work ethic with a high degree of initiative and passion
- Strong interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
- Self -motivated, with the ability to operate without support staff
Other Requirements
- Home office with reliable high-speed Internet and phone; reliable transportation.
- Residency in New England or New York State is preferred.
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science is an advantage.
Salary
- Remuneration: $22.50/hour for the first six months. Based upon a successful review, the hourly rate will rise to $25/hour, to a maximum set by the Board of Directors. Currently this is $15,000 annually.
- Hours of work required: An annual average of approximately 30 hours a month. However, the number of hours per month varies widely during the year as the March regional conference requires significantly more investment of time from February through April, as conference-related activities pick up.
- Expenses: NEST does not pay for home Internet service, car expenses, gas or mileage during the year. NEST does pay for travel and hotel expense for board meetings and the Sharing the Fire conference.
